Riding the Rails: Classic Train Journeys of the World

All aboard! The days of luxurious and adventurous train travel are back. Hop aboard one of these renown trains from across the world to experience breath taking views, delicious food, and a trip to fulfill anybody’s wanderlust.

Copper Canyon Railway, Mexico
The Ferrocarril Chihuahua al Pacifico (Copper Canyon Railway) features 36 bridges and 87 tunnels along its 655km length. Connecting the mountainous arid interior of northern Mexico with the Pacific coast, the railway line passes through landscapes that include sheer canyon walls, waterfalls and high desert plains. Two trains operate on this route between Los Mochis and Chihuahua: the primera express (first class) has a restaurant, bar and reclining seats and makes fewer stops than the clase economica (economy class). Canyon Travel operates a private rail car with an open deck area ‘to absorb the canyon’s outdoor atmosphere’

Ghan, Australia
The saga that is the Ghan started in 1877 when the original railway line from Adelaide to Alice Springs was laid. This initial century-old stretch of line ran straight through a flood plain, resulting in frequent outback strandings after rain. In 1980 a new service on a different line made the run – replacing the old Ghan, which made its last journey in ’82. The great Ghan cuts through Australia’s remote Red Centre, its tropical north and gentle south. It now runs twice weekly from Adelaide to Alice Springs to Darwin; the trip takes two nights in either direction.

Rocky Mountaineer, Canada
This two-day tour through the magnificent Canadian Rockies is done in daylight, so you can see every dazzling canyon, each inspiring river, and all its verdant valleys and glittering glacial lakes. As you depart from coastal Vancouver, press your face up to the glass to view the spectacular mountains of British Columbia. Then the essence of the Rockies takes shape out the window as you roll through Alberta, enjoying the natural beauty of Jasper or Banff and the big city splendour of Calgary..

El Nariz del Diablo, Ecuador
Heading south from Riobamba, the death-defying section of track known as El Nariz del Diablo (Devil’s Nose) runs from Alausí to Sibambe. Construction began in 1908; at Sibambe a series of switchbacks were carved into the steep Andean rock to allow the train to ascend nearly 1000m to Alausí, which sits at 2607m. Locals recommend buying tickets the night before to avoid long queues during the day; the ride lasts four to five hours; dress in layers as the weather is unpredictable.

Venice Simplon-Orient Express, Italy
Glamour pusses, this train trip is guaranteed to keep you purring all the way from Venice through to London. Luxury abounds, from the sumptuously fitted dining car (with French silverware, linen-dressed tables and crystal glassware) to the piano-bar car – you’ll need to pack your gowns and tuxedos. Ladies, Manolo Blahnik heels are perfect for teetering around Europe’s most romantic cities: Vienna, Paris, Prague and Istanbul – all of which the Orient graces with its presence. Your fare includes table d’hôte meals; divine morsels from the à la carte menu and 24-hour compartment service are extra.

Cuzco to Puno, Peru
This 10-hour ride travels between the capital Cuzco and Puno on the banks of Lake Titicaca. The high altitude around Lake Titicaca makes for exceptionally clear air, and the luminescent quality of the sunlight suffuses the highland Altiplano and sparkles on the deep waters of the lake. At the other end of the journey, Cuzco is a unique combination of colonial and religious splendour built on the hefty stone foundations of the Incas. Your train ticket includes lunch and afternoon tea.

Trans-Siberian, Russia to China
The classic Trans-Siberian service runs from Moscow’s Yaroslavl Station across a third of the globe to the crumbling charm of Vladivostock. It memorably skirts Lake Baikal, which appears seemingly out of nowhere in the middle of the Siberian taiga. Veering off the main line, the Trans-Mongolian continues past Russian gingerbread houses and stands of forest before giving way to the endless steppe and sky of Mongolia. The train trundles ever onward to Beijing, passing the spectacular Great Wall. Whether you take one week or 10, this is an epic trip. The Trans-Mongolian departs Moscow every Tuesday.

Beijing-Shanghai high-speed train, China
Just recently starting operation, this white-and-blue, sleek-nosed train will take you from Beijing to Shanghai at 300 kilometres per hour (186mph) in 4 hours 48 minutes. Built to improve the transportation system in China, for visitors the train becomes a convenient way to travel between the country’s two main cities, as well as fabulous means to see the countryside. When making a booking, you will notice that you can take either a D type or G type train to experience the CRH high-speed train service. The G train has an average speed of 300km/hr while the D train has an average speed of 250km per hour.

Palace on Wheels, India
To travel maharaja-style, try the RTDC Palace on Wheels operates weekly tours of Rajasthan, departing from Delhi every Wednesday (September to April). The itinerary covers Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Ranthambhore National Park, Chittorgarh (Chittor), Udaipur, Keoladeo Ghana National Park and Agra. It’s a mammoth stretch in seven days, but most of the travelling is done at night. This train once used the maharajas’ original carriages, but these became so ancient that new carriages were refurbished to look like the originals. The train has two dining cars and a bar, and each coach, containing four doubles with private bathroom, is attended by a splendidly costumed captain and attendant.

Coast Starlight, USA
Traversing America’s west coast, the Starlight pulls in to some of the States’ great cities: Seattle, Portland and Los Angeles. The trip takes a mere 35 hours to negotiate three states: Washington, Oregon and California. Modern conveniences make the hours pass even more quickly, including various comfort levels of accommodation, a dining car and lounge with on-board entertainment. But the window will likely provide the most exhilarating entertainment – the train passes humbling mountains and vast oceanscapes. The trip lasts around 35 hours; various accommodation options are available.

Jack & Debbie’s Travels

August 8
We arrived at the Iberostar Grand Rose Hall to cool, fragrant washcloths and champagne before we checked in.  We were upgraded to an oceanfront suite that is fabulous.  Our private balcony stretches over the aqua blue waters of the Caribbean with a comfortable couch settle into just to watch the waves crash to shore.  The rooms are large with a sitting area that has a couch and table, flat screen tv, ipod docking station, and a fully stocked bar.
We spent the first day celebrating Jack’s birthday by the infinite pool overlooking the beach.  We read and napped under thatched roof palapas very close to the swim up pool bar.  We even met some Alabama fans while we ordering a drink.  Talking football and watching golf sitting on bar stools in the water.
Can it get any better for Jack’s birthday?  Our butler delivered balloons and a bottle of champagne to our room before we went to dinner.  The Japanese restaurant was delicious serving sushi and many choices of Japanese food.  You could sit at a private table or with a group and watch the chef do his tricks.
Lovely day!

August 9
Up early to exercise in the fitness room for 45 minutes. Then to the breakfast buffet where we ordered omelets and Jack had his favorite banana milkshake. Then we were off to spend the day at Sandals Royal Caribbean.  A beautiful resort!  We took a boat over to the private offshore island and found a quiet place to relax and read.  There was a small pool with a swim up bar.  Very intimate and quiet complete with a Jerk Shack serving jerk chicken and beef.  There is also a Thai restaurant on the island that is open at night.  Must be very romantic taking the boat over going to the restaurant surrounded by tiki torches.  We went back the main resort for lunch at the beach grill and spent the next couple of hours on floats in the pool and swimming out to a floating platform where we watched boats go by.  Back to the Iberostar by 4pm to nap on the pool beds listening to music and enjoying the cool breeze.  Drinks at the lobby bar where the bartender played Kansas on his guitar.  Really?!!  Kansas!  I know, I know.  How and why would a 20 something Jamaican even know a Kansas song?  We enjoyed it though.  Dinner at the Italian restaurant was excellent!  Another day in paradise.

August 11
Day 4 of our tropical vacation.  What do we do on the last day of vacation?  We decided we should enjoy the beautiful pool and beach.  The pool is actually 3 pools that flow into each other.  The quiet pool is small and surrounded by chaise lounges with thatched roof palapas.  This pool merges with the activity pool where there are basketball goals and a volleyball net.  At the edge of the pool is a jetted hot tub.  A waterfall flowing under a bridge slides into the largest of the 3 pools.  This is a 0 entry pool or infinite pool complete with a swim up bar which, of course, has sports on it non-stop.  The pool overlooks the brilliant white sand beach and aqua water.  We stayed at the quiet pool and read or walked the beach all day.  We returned to the room to find the Jacuzzi tub in the bathroom filled with bubble bath and hibiscus flowers!  The day ended with cocktails from a terrace overlooking the pool and beach and soft music in the background, gentle breeze, and heat lighting flashing through the clouds.  Another day in paradise.

Seven Resorts with Spectacular Views

(CNN) — A pool sounds good, a great decor is pleasant, but one of the nicest amenities a vacation destination can offer is a room with a view. Travel agents say it’s the feature clients ask about most when booking a dream getaway.
“Everyone aspires to have the best view in the house,” said Terry McCabe, national director of leisure for Altour.
“For some people, the [most important] experience is opening the drapes in the morning and looking at nature at its best. … It takes people out of their everyday life.”
With that in mind, we’re taking you around the world to seven hotels where spectacular vistas rule.
Just remember that with so many beautiful places dotting the globe, this list is just a small taste of the stunning views travelers can wake up to.

1. Jade Mountain, St. Lucia

There is literally nothing blocking your view of St. Lucia’s famous Piton Mountains and the Caribbean Sea at this resort.
The fourth wall is entirely absent from Jade Mountain’s suites, which the hotel calls “sanctuaries,” so guests get unobstructed panoramas of the beautiful surroundings.
Each sanctuary also comes with its own infinity pool for the ultimate in privacy and relaxation.
“It’s total luxury, and it’s a great romantic spot. You can be as alone as you want there,” McCabe said.
But be prepared to completely unplug during your stay.
Jade Mountain is “deliberately techno-free,” the resort says. There are no telephones, radios or televisions in the rooms, and guests are asked to not to use their cell phones in public. Internet access is available at reception “for those who simply cannot let go of the outside world.”

* Rates start at $950 a night.

2. Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, Canada

Experience this magical corner of Banff National Park, and you may feel like explorer Thomas Wilson, who exclaimed, “I never in all my explorations saw such a matchless scene,” when he first glimpsed the lake in 1882.
Known to native tribes as “lake of little fishes,” the majestic body of water was dubbed Emerald Lake by Wilson, and later renamed Lake Louise in honor of Queen Victoria’s fourth daughter, Princess Louise Caroline Alberta.
“It’s just so beautiful,” said Becky Veith of Travel Experts. “The view is incredible.”
The hotel offers sweeping panoramas of the lake and the surrounding Canadian Rockies. Come in the winter for unforgettable skiing, sleigh rides and dog sledding — Veith was there when the lake was frozen, and she had a chance to skate on the icy surface.
There’s also lots to do in the summer, including hiking, horseback riding and canoeing.

* Rates start at about $358 a night for the Sizzling Summer Travel Package, which is in effect until September 30.

3. Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, Tanzania

This luxury lodge sits perched on the edge of the Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest caldera — formed when a giant volcano exploded and collapsed about 3 million years ago.
Thousands of animals roam the floor of the crater, including lions, wildebeests, zebras and gazelles. The stunning landscape and abundance of wildlife prompted UNESCO to declare the area a World Heritage Site, it one of the greatest natural wonders of the planet.
“You can be in your room and look out the window and there’s a zebra walking by. It’s just amazing,” McCabe said.
“Everything is down there, and you’re almost looking back at creation in a way. You feel a little bit like it’s the Garden of Eden, like you’re the first person to ever see this.”
The accommodations are luxurious, imaginative and fanciful, she said.

* Rates start at $720 per person, which includes meals, drinks and scheduled safari activities.

4. The Springs Resort & Spa, Costa Rica

For a bit of a thrill with your beautiful view, why not stay near a volcano?
This boutique hotel sits on a mountain ridge less than four miles north of Costa Rica’s Arenal Volcano but is “safely outside the government declared danger zone,” the resort says on its website.
“When I was there, it didn’t blow, I was really bummed,” Veith said. “[But] you can see the eruptions when the lava is flowing from the volcano.”
(Arenal was Costa Rica’s most active volcano until 2010 but entered into a resting phase last fall.)
Observe the volcano from your room or from one of the resort’s 18 pools and natural hot mineral springs.

* Rates start at about $385 a night.

5. Hotel Villa Ducale, Sicily

This boutique hotel features just 11 double rooms and six suites, but there is nothing small about the sweeping views.
Each room has a private balcony or terrace that lets guests take in vistas of Giardini Naxos Bay, Mount Etna, Italy’s mainland coastline or the Strait of Messina.
The Hotel Villa Ducale was among the winners of TripAdvisor’s 2011 Travelers’ Choice awards — chosen by the site’s members as one of the top 10 luxury hotels in the world.

* Rates start at about $285 a night in September.

6. The Cambrian Hotel, Switzerland

Expect endless mountain views from this picturesque location in the village of Adelboden in the Swiss Alps.
Built in the late 19th century and revamped in recent years, the hotel is a scenic and luxurious base for hiking and mountain biking in the summer, and world-class skiing in the winter.
And when it comes to promising relaxation for guests, the resort takes a whimsical approach.
“Just look at the cows reclining in the meadows outside,” the hotel instructs on its website. “They don’t look stressed, do they?”

* Rates start at about $225 in September.

7. Hayman Island Resort, Australia

A favorite with honeymooners, this five-star resort is on a private island within the Great Barrier Reef.
Guests can take in uninterrupted views of the Coral Sea and the Whitsundays — a chain of islands known for their idyllic white sand beaches.
Then there are the underwater vistas — Hayman offers memorable snorkeling and scuba experiences, as well as night diving on the Great Barrier Reef.
The famous resort, which made the list of Travel + Leisure’s Best Island Hotels, is reopening in August after recovering from two cyclones that swept through the region earlier this year.

* Rates start at about $510 a night.

Interview with Denton
How long have you worked for Sandals? How long have you been a Butler?

I’ve worked with Sandals for 8 years and 7 months and I have been a butler for 6 years and 7 months.

What made you decide to become a butler?
I am a people person. I like to be around people to talk with them and share information about my beautiful island. I love what I do even though at times it’s really challenging, it depends on the type of clients.

What do you like most about your job?
When I am taking care of a guest and when they are leaving, I get a hand shake or a hug saying that I’ve done a great job and that they will return. I also like the reactions to the little things we do that come with a “wow.”

There are so many things Jamaica has to offer. What is something you love to do that the average tourist might not know about?
Tours to places that are really adventurous and where you can relax and sense freedom. To cook things that come with true taste from scratch. Rice and peas with coconut milk and chicken, etc. To plant things and watch them grow, like flowers and fruit trees.

4 Reasons You Need a Vacation

Are we so worried about keeping our jobs that we’re refusing to leave our desks? Are we so busy picking up the slack for our downsized coworkers that we don’t dare think about a trip to the beach/lake/Hogwarts School? Maybe so, but vacations make us better people—and better employees. Here’s how to look at it:

We’re slackers when it comes to time off.

Almost half of all American workers didn’t take all their vacation days last year. A full
89 percent of the French took their time off- and they get more than a month of it.

A more stressful workplace makes vacations more important than ever.

“The research is clear that failing to take a vacation creates higher levels of stress and
greater levels of disengagement at work.” Douglas J. Matthews, of Manpower/Right
Management, tells forbes.com.

We’ve forgotten what a vacation feels like.

That week off takes some getting used to. “Keep vacationing, and it will feel right,”
says Psychology Today blogger (and psychologist) Ian Newby-Clark. Though it may
be “excruciating” the first few days, he adds, you’ll stop checking email and start feeling
untethered soon enough.

Forgoing a vacation doesn’t make you more important.

“Take your vacation, and let them miss you.? Advises vault.com’s Connie Thanasoulis-Cerrachio on forbes.com.
You’ll be a better problem solver.

That’s what Jonah Lehrer explains on wired.com.
One experiment- “Lessons from a Faraway Land: the Effect of Spatial Distance on
Creative Cognition,” done at Indiana University-found that students tackled problems better after they were told the conflicts originated in Greece or California instead of in Indiana. “Our surroundings constrain our creativity,” concludes Lehrer. “It’s not until we’re napping by the pool with a pina colada in hand-when work seems a million miles away-that we suddenly find the answer we’ve needed all along.”
